Delicious Apple Recipes and Fall Delights

Our annual pilgrimage to the Delmont Apple Festival always follows a familiar and comforting routine. The day begins with eager anticipation, knowing that a full day of apple-themed delights awaits. Our first stop, without fail, is to procure cups of cider – an essential start to the festivities. We then leisurely stroll through the bustling craft area, admiring the local artistry and unique wares. Lunch is always a highlight, centered around the irresistible apple dumplings. As the afternoon progresses, we make our way to the apple barn, filling our bags with a diverse selection of fresh apples. A Journey Through the Delmont Apple Festival

The Enduring Charm of Delmont’s Apple Fest

The Delmont Apple Festival is more than just a market; it’s a celebration of autumn’s harvest, a gathering place for families, and a showcase for local artisans and producers. The air buzzes with excitement, laughter, and the sweet aroma of apples and cinnamon. Every corner offers something new to discover, from live music to captivating craft demonstrations. Sips of Tradition: Hot and Cold Cider Delights

Upon entering the festival grounds, one of the very first stops is always the quaint little shack dedicated to serving fresh cups of cider. Depending on the unpredictable autumn weather, visitors can choose between steaming hot or refreshingly cold apple cider. Typically, this time of year brings with it chilly, often rainy, days, making hot cider the automatic choice – its warmth a welcome embrace against the crisp air. However, this year surprised us with an unseasonably warm weekend, with temperatures soaring to almost 80 degrees! This delightful anomaly allowed for a rare treat: enjoying both a comforting cup of hot cider and a crisp, cold one. And all for an incredible price of just 50 cents a cup, proving that some of the best festival experiences are also the most affordable. It’s these simple pleasures that define the Delmont Apple Festival experience.

The Quest for the Perfect Apple Dumpling

Lunch at the festival is synonymous with one thing: a piping hot apple dumpling, ideally served with a generous scoop of cold vanilla ice cream and drizzled with sweet cinnamon syrup. This has been our tradition for as long as I can remember, and the anticipation of that first bite is always immense. Growing up, there was a specific church booth that consistently served the most perfect apple dumplings, a true festival highlight. Their dumplings were legendary – perfectly baked apples encased in flaky pastry, swimming in a rich, spiced sauce. Sadly, last year, they were conspicuously absent, and their familiar stand was nowhere to be found. This year, we sought out an apple dumpling from one of the other food vendors, hoping to recapture that nostalgic flavor. While it was still enjoyable, it just wasn’t quite the same as the beloved original. We often reminisce, trying to recall the name of “the church that sold apple dumplings,” always with a wishful plea: if you’re reading this, please come back! Your legendary dumplings are sorely missed.

The Bounty of the Orchard: Apple Picking and Fresh Cider

For many, the absolute best part of the Delmont Apple Festival is the opportunity to select your own fresh apples. A large barn is set up, housing an impressive array of bins overflowing with various apple varieties. It’s always a delightful surprise to see just how many different kinds of apples are cultivated! From crisp Galas and tart Granny Smiths to sweet Honeycrisps and versatile Fujis, there’s an apple for every taste and purpose. You purchase a bag, and then the real fun begins – filling it up with your chosen bounty. This time around, we opted for a half-peck, carefully selecting a few apples of each kind to ensure a diverse collection for both snacking and baking experiments. Before concluding our day and heading home, we made sure to grab several quarts of fresh-pressed apple cider to enjoy throughout the week. There’s truly nothing quite like the taste of locally sourced, fresh cider, a perfect representation of autumn’s generosity.
