Balancing Indulgence: My Active Lifestyle and a Love for Desserts

You might not peg me as an extreme athlete, but maintaining an active lifestyle is a deeply ingrained part of who I am. It’s a balance I’ve cultivated since my youth, and it remains crucial to my well-being, especially given my profession.

From High School Marching Bands to Modern-Day Zumba

My journey with physical activity began early. In high school, I was part of a highly competitive marching band. While some might argue it’s not a traditional sport, the rigorous practices, long rehearsals, and demanding performances were undeniably a tremendous form of exercise. We marched for miles, perfected complex routines, and built serious endurance. Following that, I also played softball for a community team, further cementing the importance of movement in my life.

Fast forward to today, and while competitive sports are no longer on my agenda, my commitment to an active routine is unwavering. I’m a dedicated participant in Zumba classes twice a week, loving the high-energy dance fitness that keeps me moving and smiling. On days when Zumba isn’t on the schedule and the weather is inviting, you’ll find me at the park, enjoying a good long walk.

Recently, I made an exciting discovery: a new walking trail located a mere 5 minutes from my home! It’s incredible to think I’ve been living here for a year and had no idea this hidden gem existed. The trail gracefully winds along one of Pittsburgh’s three iconic rivers, offering picturesque views and a refreshing escape. While I’ll likely never conquer its entire length in one go, it consistently provides an excellent workout. An added bonus? If it’s scorching hot outside, as it often was last week, the trail’s natural shade and proximity to the river make it a much more tolerable and enjoyable place to walk. I do find myself a bit of an anomaly on the trail, though, as most people are whizzing by on bikes while I’m happily walking, trying my best not to become an obstacle. It’s probably been well over a decade since I last rode my own bike!

Why Staying Active is Essential for a Dessert Creator

Living an active lifestyle, even if it’s just a brisk mile walk in the evening, is paramount for me, and it’s directly tied to my job. As a recipe developer and food blogger, my work involves creating and, crucially, tasting every single dessert I make. I would never share a recipe on my blog that I haven’t personally sampled and approved. Since a significant portion of my creations fall into the deliciously indulgent category, staying active is my strategic way to make room for these extra decadent delights, like this very No Bake Chocolate Banana Caramel Tart. It’s all about enjoying life’s sweet moments without compromise, supported by a healthy, balanced routine.

There are times when I don’t get my daily walk or Zumba session in, and I genuinely start to feel antsy, a clear signal that my body craves movement. This was particularly evident when my car was in the shop for two agonizing weeks (they initially quoted me four days!). The lack of mobility was pure torture. To avoid feeling completely cooped up, I resorted to walking up and down my street a few times a day – steering clear of the colossal hill nearby and the super busy main road that, inexplicably, lacks sidewalks. This experience only solidified my conviction: movement isn’t just a choice; it’s a necessity for my physical and mental well-being, especially when my work involves so much delightful, rich food.

Crafting the Perfect No Bake Chocolate Banana Caramel Tart

This summer, I’ve been on an undeniable no-bake kick, primarily focusing on no-bake pies to beat the heat. This time, however, I was determined to create a show-stopping tart. Interestingly, I actually attempted a version of this tart years ago, and frankly, it was a hot mess. Undeterred, and with a few years of experience under my belt, I decided to revisit the concept. This time around, armed with lessons learned, I made some crucial adjustments that led to spectacular success, resulting in the beautifully balanced and utterly delicious tart you see today.

The magic of this tart lies in its layers of harmonious flavors and textures. It starts with a simple yet incredibly satisfying Oreo cookie crust, providing a rich, chocolatey foundation without the need for an oven. This crunchy base sets the stage for the star players. Next, a generous layer of thinly sliced, perfectly ripe bananas adds a natural sweetness and soft texture that complements the other components beautifully.

Elevating the experience is a generous pour of luscious caramel sauce – whether you opt for our tried-and-true homemade version or a high-quality store-bought alternative, the rich, buttery notes are essential. Finally, a silky smooth chocolate ganache blankets everything, providing an intense chocolate hit that perfectly balances the sweetness of the caramel and bananas. To crown this masterpiece, more caramel is artfully swirled on top, adding both visual appeal and an extra burst of gooey deliciousness. Each forkful is a symphony of textures and flavors – creamy, crunchy, sweet, and intensely chocolatey.

This decadent no bake chocolate tart combined with caramel and bananas may look dressed up with its caramel swirl, but you don’t need a special occasion to make it. Great way to use up those overripe bananas sitting on your kitchen counter.

Ingredients

  • 2 1/4 cups chocolate sandwich cookie crumbs, such as Oreo
  • 1/4 cup (2 ounces or 4 tablespoons) unsalted butter, melted
  • 8 ounces semisweet chocolate, chopped
  • 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, room temperature
  • 1 large overripe banana, sliced
  • 3/4 cup caramel sauce (homemade or store bought)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, mix together the cookie crumbs and melted butter. Press firmly into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch fluted tart pan with a removable bottom (ensure there are no holes in the crust or the filling may stick to the pan). Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or until thoroughly cold and firm.
  2. In a large heatproof bowl, add the chopped semisweet chocolate. In a small saucepan, gently heat the heavy whipping cream until it is hot but not boiling. Pour the hot cream over the chopped chocolate and let it sit undisturbed for 1 minute. Then, stir gently until the chocolate has completely melted and the mixture is smooth and glossy, forming a rich ganache.
  3. Pour 1/2 cup of the caramel sauce into the bottom of the chilled cookie crust and spread it out evenly. Arrange the sliced banana pieces in a single layer over the caramel. Carefully pour the chocolate ganache mixture over the bananas and caramel, smoothing it out with a spatula to ensure all the banana slices are fully covered.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of the remaining 1/4 cup caramel sauce artfully on top of the chocolate ganache. Using a knife or a skewer, gently swirl the caramel into the chocolate to create a beautiful marbled effect. Refrigerate the tart until it is completely firm, typically for at least 2-4 hours, before slicing and serving.
