Hot chocolate is undeniably one of my favorite winter beverages. I absolutely love to drink it, but I’m often hesitant to buy it from cafes or stores.

Why, you might ask? Well, it’s because many establishments tend to cut corners by using pre-made cocoa mixes that lack real chocolate.

And even worse, some places prepare it with hot water instead of creamy milk! That’s simply unacceptable.

I wouldn’t want to consider myself a food snob, but honestly, if I can create a far superior version in the comfort of my own kitchen, I find it disappointing to waste my money on a subpar treat.

Just recently, I purchased a peppermint hot cocoa from a local amusement park, and to my dismay, it barely had any discernible candy cane flavor. What’s more, it wasn’t very creamy.

Deeply disappointed, I returned home determined to create my own Peppermint Hot Chocolate masterpiece!

The result? A festive, homemade Christmas hot chocolate that truly captures the essence of the holidays. To complete the experience, I garnished it with a generous dollop of peppermint whipped cream and a sprinkle of crushed candy canes. The combination of flavors and textures is simply divine!

My peppermint hot chocolate recipe stands out from the rest because I use both high-quality baking chocolate and unsweetened cocoa powder. This combination creates a richer, more well-rounded chocolate taste that simply cannot be achieved by using either ingredient alone.

Cocoa powder delivers a deep, intense chocolate flavor, while the melted baking chocolate adds unparalleled richness and a luxuriously creamy texture. The perfect harmony!

That’s why I often find hot chocolate made from pre-packaged cocoa mixes, even when prepared with warm milk, lacking in the depth and complexity of flavor that I crave.

While I adore my thick hot chocolate (which is a real treat), it’s more of an indulgent dessert than an everyday hot cocoa. My peppermint version is somewhere in between, special enough for Christmas while still being perfect for an easy weeknight treat.

The best part about this recipe? The cocoa mixture can be prepared ahead of time and stored conveniently in your pantry!

My hot cocoa cravings often strike in the evening, when the last thing I want to do is dirty my measuring spoons, cutting board, and knife every single time I want a cup.

Since this peppermint hot chocolate recipe is based on my homemade hot chocolate mix, scaled down for two servings, you can easily combine all the dry ingredients ahead of time and store them in a jar in your pantry.

When you’re ready to indulge, simply warm up your milk, add the cocoa mixture, and stir in a touch of peppermint extract. The whole process takes just minutes!

For added convenience, you can even make your peppermint whipped cream ahead of time and freeze it into individual portions for easy serving. This means you’re mere minutes away from a warm, delicious drink any time!

‘Tis the season for easy Christmas drinks! This peppermint hot chocolate fits the bill perfectly.

Hot Cocoa vs. Hot Chocolate: What’s the Difference?

While the terms are often used interchangeably, there’s a subtle difference between hot cocoa and hot chocolate. The key lies in the ingredients.

Hot cocoa is typically made with cocoa powder, sugar, and milk (or hot water, though milk is much better!) while hot chocolate is crafted using real chocolate, which is then melted into milk.

My peppermint hot chocolate recipe incorporates both baking chocolate and cocoa powder, blurring the lines between the two. So, feel free to use the names interchangeably and call it peppermint hot cocoa – either way, it’s delicious!

Ingredients You’ll Need for Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Here’s a breakdown of the ingredients you’ll need to create your own magical peppermint hot chocolate:

  • Cocoa powder: I recommend using natural unsweetened cocoa powder. While Dutch-processed cocoa powder is a great choice, it can be more expensive and harder to find in some areas. Regardless of which type you choose, it’s crucial to use high-quality cocoa powder. Cheaper brands can often leave a chalky aftertaste that detracts from the overall flavor. Look for a cocoa powder that is rich in flavor and aroma.
  • Semi-sweet chocolate: Using melting baking chocolate is key to achieving a wonderfully creamy texture, while also enhancing the overall chocolate flavor of your drink. Opt for a brand you enjoy eating on its own – the better the chocolate, the better your hot chocolate will be.
  • Brown sugar: Brown sugar adds a subtle caramel flavor to your peppermint hot chocolate, thanks to the molasses content. This hint of caramel complements the chocolate and peppermint beautifully. Choose a soft, moist brown sugar for best results.
  • Granulated sugar: Granulated sugar provides additional sweetness without overpowering the other flavors. This helps balance the overall sweetness and prevents the brown sugar from being too forward.
  • Salt: A pinch of salt might seem unusual in a sweet drink, but it plays a crucial role in enhancing and balancing the flavors of the other ingredients. It brings out the richness of the chocolate and the warmth of the peppermint.
  • Milk: For the ultimate creamy and decadent peppermint hot chocolate, I highly recommend using whole milk. The higher fat content contributes significantly to the rich, velvety texture. While you can technically use low-fat or skim milk, the resulting drink won’t have the same luxurious flavor and mouthfeel.
  • Peppermint extract: The peppermint extract is what gives your hot chocolate that classic candy cane flavor. Be sure to use peppermint extract, not peppermint oil, as the oil is much more concentrated and could easily overpower the other flavors. Start with a small amount and adjust to your preference.

Step-by-Step Instructions: How to Make Peppermint Hot Chocolate

Ready to create your own homemade peppermint hot chocolate?

  1. Heat the milk in a saucepan over medium heat until it’s warm but not boiling. You want it hot enough to melt the chocolate but not so hot that it scalds.
  2. Whisk in the unsweetened cocoa powder, finely chopped semi-sweet chocolate, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and salt.
  3. Cook the mixture for about 1-2 minutes, whisking frequently to prevent the chocolate from sticking to the bottom of the pan. Continue whisking until the chocolate has melted completely and the mixture has thickened slightly.
  4. Stir in the peppermint extract. Begin with the smaller amount (1/2 teaspoon), then taste the hot chocolate and add the remaining amount if desired, depending on your preference for peppermint flavor. Cool for 5 minutes before drinking, so you don’t burn your tongue.

Serve your peppermint hot chocolate immediately, topped with a generous dollop of peppermint whipped cream or a sprinkle of mini marshmallows for an extra touch of festive fun.

Peppermint Whipped Cream: The Perfect Hot Chocolate Topping

As I mentioned earlier, I love serving my homemade hot chocolate with a generous dollop of peppermint whipped cream. It intensifies the minty holiday flavor and takes the whole experience to the next level.

If you’re concerned that the peppermint flavor might be too intense, you can always opt for one of my other flavored whipped cream recipes instead:

  • Homemade Whipped Cream (a classic vanilla option)
  • Chocolate Whipped Cream (adds even more chocolatey goodness)
  • Cream Cheese Whipped Cream (for a tangy and rich flavor)

For an extra-special treat, you can also pour your hot chocolate over a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream, creating a delightful twist on an affogato.

Alternatively, you can simply toss a handful of mini marshmallows on top. It’s a classic, easy, and delicious option that requires minimal cleanup. No judgment here – sometimes simplicity is best!

Ingredients

  • 1 ounce semi-sweet baking chocolate*, finely chopped (use high-quality for best results)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, sifted (use high-quality for best results)
  • 2 tablespoons packed brown sugar (soft and moist, not dry and crumbly)
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • Pinch of kosher or sea salt
  • 1 cup whole milk (for best results, do not use low fat or skim)
  • 1/2 – 1 teaspoon peppermint extract (not oil)
  • Peppermint Whipped Cream, for serving

Instructions

    1. In a medium bowl, mix together chocolate, cocoa powder, brown sugar, sugar, and salt.

If you’re making this recipe ahead of time, store mix in an airtight container for up to 3 months.

    2. Heat milk in a medium sauce pan until warm (not boiling).
    3. Whisk in cocoa mix then bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute, whisking constantly, until melted and smooth and it starts to thicken.
    4. Remove from the heat and whisk in 1/2 teaspoon peppermint extract. Taste and add the remaining 1/2 teaspoon if needed (I personally like the full 1 teaspoon but not everyone likes a strong peppermint flavor).
    5. Cool for 5 minutes then serve with peppermint whipped cream (get recipe here).
